The person behind the stories

Piers Wehner trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and won the BBC’s Carleton Hobbs radio drama award in 2009. Naxos’s professional biography connects that training with a career in radio drama, audiobooks and documentary narration. It mentions adaptations of work by John le Carré and Stefan Zweig, as well as a role in The Archers, offering a picture of work across several kinds of spoken performance.

His stage credits include Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory productions. The company’s cast list for Two Gentlemen of Verona identifies him as Proteus, while its Richard III cast lists Grey. A University of Bristol announcement also names him among the performers in The Conquering Hero. These are professional theatre credits to explore alongside his recorded work; they introduce a broader acting career than the single Taylor title featured here.

On this bookshelf, his recording is My Name Is Markham, a St Mary’s short story narrated from Markham’s point of view. It offers a different angle on the familiar historians and their colleagues. For someone already following the novels, the story is a chance to return to that world through another character’s account. Follow the short-story placement guide before choosing it as your next adventure.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a contrasting listening choice. Audible credits both Wehner and Katy Carmichael on the linked Naxos edition of Anne Brontë’s novel, so it belongs among his shared performances. Readers following a narrator from comic speculative fiction into a classic can use the preview and description to choose the book for its subject as well as its performers.

Our suggested Taylor route is to begin the St Mary’s novels with Just One Damned Thing After Another, then add My Name Is Markham at its place among the shorter adventures. Choose the separately released recording when you want this particular performance. Collections containing a familiar story can use a different reader, which makes the individual edition link more helpful than the story title alone.
