What it’s about
Elizabeth Cage perceives important and dangerous things that other people cannot see. She experiences that ability as a burden, while others recognise something valuable that they would like to control. After her husband dies unexpectedly, a medical institution with hidden intentions takes an interest in her.
There she encounters Michael Jones, whose loyalties are uncertain. White Silence begins Elizabeth’s supernatural-thriller sequence with bereavement, unwanted attention and the difficulty of deciding whom to trust.
The threat is rooted in her unusual perception: an aspect of herself she would rather live with quietly becomes a reason for other people to pursue their own plans.

Reader questions
Do I need to read the earlier books first?
No. This novel is the opening novel of its own series. Begin here to meet the central characters before following their later adventures. The official chronology lists this book first within its sequence. Explore the other series when you want another fictional world.
Who narrates the White Silence audiobook?
Kate Scarfe is the narrator credited on the linked this novel recording. The professional profile identifies her as Katie Scarfe. Audible also lists a separate Zara Ramm edition, so use the performer and product listing to distinguish them rather than assuming every recording is identical.
Where this fits
Begin the four-novel Elizabeth Cage sequence here, then read Dark Light, Long Shadows and Bad Moon. This novel introduces Elizabeth’s circumstances and the institutional threat carried into the next novel. These books form their own supernatural strand in Taylor’s catalogue.
You can start this series without reading the St Mary’s novels or learning the Time Police’s world first.
Why readers love it
Our view
This is the clearest alternative for Taylor readers who want suspense focused on one vulnerable individual. The premise places a familiar source of supposed safety, medical care, beside the possibility of exploitation. That tension is more useful as a reading guide than a list of unexplained supernatural powers.
We would recommend it to readers interested in uncertain motives and a protagonist whose difference brings danger as well as insight. Michael’s ambiguous position adds a question about trust without requiring the synopsis to identify allies or enemies.
Choose this novel to meet Elizabeth before later books deepen the mystery around her.
Listening notes
The linked unabridged UK recording credits Kate Scarfe and lasts ten hours and thirty-one minutes. The narrator profile explains the Katie Scarfe naming connection used elsewhere on the site.
This opening recording has a different narrator credit from the later listed Cage audiobooks, so check the edition block when continuing to Dark Light. The duration covers the complete this novel novel.
