About this story

The Steam-Pump Jump starts with Max confined to Sick Bay and Peterson struggling after another bereavement. She decides that he needs help, then recruits Markham to carry out her plan. He tells the resulting intervention himself.

The publisher's setup brings together an R&D enthusiast, a troubled security chief, quarrelling historians, religious friction and a great deal of dirty water.

Our view: the emotional problem gives this premise its point. Markham's lack of tact makes him an unlikely choice for delicate support, so readers can expect the idea of helping a friend to collide with the institute's peculiar methods.

Read it in the individual ebook or as part of Long Story Short. Its position in this site's reading guide is after An Argumentation of Historians. The separate UK unabridged audio edition credits Zara Ramm and runs for 1 hour 51 minutes.

That narration credit is distinct from Markham's role as the story's teller.
