About this story

Christmas Present begins with Max, Peterson and Markham leaving St Mary's secretly on Christmas Eve. Their destination concerns two historians who disappeared during an assignment in medieval Jerusalem, yet somehow ended up in Roman Colchester. Max thinks she can explain the mismatch.

Following her theory brings the team towards Boudicca's forces, with an angry giant pig adding a less dignified danger.

Our view: the missing colleagues give this festive expedition a stronger purpose than a holiday outing. It suits readers who want a rescue mystery wrapped in the series' mixture of historical peril and absurd practical problems.

The short story can be read separately as an ebook or within The Long and the Short of It. In the site's suggested reading sequence it follows A Trail Through Time.

Its individual UK unabridged recording is performed by Zara Ramm and lasts 1 hour 18 minutes, making it a manageable single-session return to Max's world.
